 Support for Individuals with Disabilities

 
General information

Over the last few years numerous measures hale been taken at Warsaw School of Economics to satisfy the needs of disabled students and provide them with equal educational opportunities. The measures involve, among others, the following: 
  1. modifying the rules and regulations (e.g. adding favourable provisions concerning borrowing books from the Library)
  2. financial support (special scholarships)   
  3. support offered by the Office for People with Disabilities while dealing with individual problems of students with disabilities
  4. purchase of equipment and special software to assist individuals with different disabilities in their education goals
  5. adjusting the infrastructure (eliminating architectural barriers)
Altering the physical environment to meet the needs of the disabled

The issue of modifying the physical environment to satisfy the needs of people with disabilities at Warsaw School of Economics has not been addressed fully so far. Some buildings are accessible, some only partially and some are still totally inaccessible for wheel-chair bound individuals. Building C at al. Niepodległości 128 has virtually no architectural barriers, and despite some imperfections is totally accessible for people with mobility disabilities. The main building (building G) is well modified, although there are still some works being carried out to eliminate the current obstacles. So far what has been done or installed are the following:
  1. a wheelchair ramp at the main entrance
  2. sliding entrance doors
  3. a wheelchair ramp at the stairs next to the lift
  4. a modified toilet to allow wheelchairs
The Library building has been altered to meet the needs of individuals with mobility disabilities only in part, namely its ground floor. This is what has been done:
  1. a wheelchair ramp at the main entrance to access the terrace
  2. an automatic sliding entrance door opener (it has to be pressed to open the door)
  3. wheelchair ramps at the stairs to access the ground floor
  4. a modified toilet to allow wheelchairs
Special equipment and software to assist individuals with different disabilities in their education goals

Warsaw School of Economics provides disabled students with special equipment and software to assist them in meeting their education goals. These include:
  1. text magnification software: Lunar, Magic and ZoomText
  2. Jaws – screen reading software with different speech synthesizers
  3. My Reader – low vision video magnifier (installed in the Library building, in the Polish Periodicals Reading Room)
  4. a PC for disabled students in the Library building (with Multilektor – a set designed for scanning and reading, access to the Internet, screen reading software and text magnification software, a special mouse catering for the needs of students with upper limb disabilities.
  5. a computer lab for disabled students located in "Sabinki" Dormitory no 1
  6. an induction loop in the Main Auditorium, enabling hard of hearing students to listen to lecturers
  7. portable wireless receivers (FM systems) to be lent to hard of hearing individuals using hearing aids
